Prof. Dr Mirko Resan, MD, PhD

Consultant ophthalmologist and Full Professor of Ophthalmology

His clinical work focuses primarily on cataract surgery, including the most complex cases, laser vision correction surgery (LASIK and PRK), and corneal surgery, including corneal transplantation and corneal cross-linking.

Education

He was born in Zemun in 1971. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Belgrade in 1998 with an average grade of 8.67. He completed his specialist training in ophthalmology at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade in 2007 with the highest grade.

He completed his master's studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and in 2007 defended his master's thesis entitled "The effect of metabolic control on the onset and course of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes".

In 2014, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Association between stromal photoablation in myopic eyes and the levels of immune response mediators in tears" at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy, University of Defence in Belgrade.

Clinical experience

He gained extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, predominantly in anterior segment surgery and ocular trauma, at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Military Medical Academy, where he worked for more than 20 years. From 2023 to 2026, he also served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Military Medical Academy.

He has been a member of the clinical team at VIDAR-ORASIS SWISS Eye Clinic in Novi Sad since 2021.

Advanced training and academic work

In 2013, he undertook advanced professional training in modern techniques of anterior segment surgery at Orasis Eye Clinic in Switzerland.

He was appointed Full Professor in 2024 at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy, University of Defence in Belgrade, where he taught at all levels of study.

He also teaches on the Optometry programme at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad.

Professional associations and publications

He is President of the Serbian Association for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is a member of the Serbian Ophthalmological Society and the Serbian Vitreoretinal Society.

As an author and co-author, he has published more than 30 scientific papers in leading international journals included in the Science Citation Index, including Clinical Ophthalmology, Journal of Clinical Medicine, Medicina, Journal of Imaging, Biomedicines, Vojnosanitetski pregled, Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia and Spectrum der Augenheilkunde. He is one of the authors of the textbook "Ophthalmology for Medical Students" and has also authored or co-authored chapters in two monographs and two international video atlases.

He regularly presents his professional and scientific work at international and national ophthalmology congresses.
