Computerised visual field test
A computerised visual field test, or perimetry, is a diagnostic procedure used to assess visual field function and detect possible areas of reduced or missing vision, known as scotomas. It is a short, non-invasive procedure that is essential in diagnosing and monitoring the treatment of different conditions affecting the eye, optic nerve and brain.
The visual field of each eye is the part of the surrounding space that we can see. It is limited by the nose and the bony margins of the eye socket and can be described in degrees. The visual field is also sometimes represented as an island of vision in a sea of darkness.
Types of perimetry
Perimetry can be divided into two main types.
Kinetic perimetry
Kinetic perimetry uses moving visual stimuli that enter the visual field from outside its borders. This method determines the boundaries of the island of vision and is particularly useful for assessing the overall width of the visual field.
Static perimetry
Static perimetry is a computerised method that precisely measures visual field sensitivity, or the height of the island of vision. It is the method used more frequently today.
