Computerised visual field test

A computerised visual field test is a painless procedure that detects areas of reduced vision and is essential in monitoring glaucoma and optic nerve disease.

The computerised visual field test (computerised perimetry) is a diagnostic procedure with which we examine the function of the visual field and the possible presence of visual field defects (scotomas). It is a non invasive procedure, irreplaceable in the diagnosis and in monitoring the effects of treatment in diseases of the eye, the optic nerve and the brain. The visual field of each eye is the space around us that we see, and it is limited by a certain number of degrees (bounded by the nose and by the bony edges of the orbit). The visual field is also described as a hill of vision in a sea of darkness. Perimetry is divided into kinetic and static perimetry. Both have their own uses. Kinetic perimetry uses moving visual stimuli that travel from outside the visual field into the visual field, and in that way we determine the borders of the hill of vision; it is better for assessing the width of the visual field. Static perimetry is a computerised method in which we precisely measure the sensitivity of the visual field, that is the height of the hill of vision, and it is the method most often used today.
