Fundus photography
Fundus photography is a diagnostic procedure in which a specialised camera is used to take images of the back of the eye. It is preferable to take the images after the patient's pupils have been dilated with medication.
This method is important for diagnosing and documenting changes at the back of the eye that occur as part of different conditions affecting the posterior segment. These include retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, optic nerve disorders, glaucoma, macular dystrophies and peripheral retinal degeneration, among others.
In addition to fundus photography, fluorescein angiography (FA) can be performed using the same camera. FA is a diagnostic procedure of great importance in diagnosing retinal vascular diseases and diabetic retinopathy and monitoring their treatment. Until recently, it was an indispensable diagnostic procedure in the work of retinal ophthalmologists. Today, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has taken a leading role in many of these assessments.
